推動金價上漲的是新冠肺炎疫情造成的經濟和政治上的不確定性，以及各國央行採取的行動，它們通過大幅下調利率和向市場注入大量資金來應對經濟增長放緩，與此同時這加劇了市場對通脹的擔憂，通脹通常會令其他資產貶值，同時也降低政府債券的回報率，令黃金更具吸引力。
分析師預計金價將進一步上漲，因為投資者寄望在新冠病毒撼動全球經濟之際，黃金能夠保值。現貨黃金在過去14個月大漲40%，距離2011年創下的每盎司1921.28美元的紀錄高位不遠。
隨著新冠疫情衝擊各個經濟體，今年投資者避險情緒濃厚，黃金在2020年的吸引力繼續增強，中央銀行和政府紛紛推出龐大的刺激計畫，刺激資金持續流入黃金ETF，2020年迄今增加了655.6噸，超過了2009年全年的增長，而且今年每月都在上升。
金融投資者，主要在歐洲和美國，一直在進行前所未有的黃金購買狂潮。今年上半年，黃金ETF基金增持價值395億美元的734噸黃金，根據世界黃金協會的數據，這一數字超過以往任何一整年，幾乎占同期黃金開採量的一半。根據彭博匯總的初步數據，黃金ETF持倉量在週二升至3234.6噸。
新冠疫情使ETF持倉量達到了紀錄高位，其影響超過了珠寶需求下降的影響，面對高風險和低收益率的情況，預計會有更多資金流入。
