7月8日，現貨黃金突破千八關口，創下九年新高，同時由於疫情加重，美國不少州重新封鎖，超40%美國人削減支出，而消費是維持美國經濟的最大支柱。美聯儲擔心新增病例會增加企業的不安情緒，稱美聯儲會有更多措施，這些都提振了的黃金的多頭。
當地時間7月7日，美國總統特朗普表示，美國“不會關閉，永遠不會關閉”，再次要求美國全面重新開放。特朗普在一場圍繞有關重新開放學校的活動中稱，現在已有超過13萬美國人死於新冠病毒。“我認為我們本來可能會死250萬或300萬人。”他說，所以美國可能已經拯救了數十萬人的生命。
近期的一份調查顯示，超過40%的受訪美國人表示，他們將削減的一些自由支配支出，這可能會加劇疫情已經造成的巨大經濟破壞。消費者增加支出恰恰是陷入困境的美國零售商急切盼望的。
隨著今年春季確診病例激增，美國各州關閉或限制了沙龍和餐館等5月份的開業，體育聯盟推遲了他們的賽季，音樂會也被取消。失業率保持在10%以上，許多因疫情導致的暫時裁員正在變成永久性裁員。
7月底，一些在疫情期間生效的財政刺激計畫將到期，其中包括每週額外600美元的失業救濟金，這一計畫尤其提振了低收入家庭的支出。但美國新冠病毒確診病例激增，威脅到消費者支出增長，加劇了市場謹慎基調，美指承壓97關口附近。
在美國經濟大面積重新開放、數萬億美元的財政刺激計畫開始惠及失業和受重創的企業之後，美國經濟在5月和6月創造了750萬個就業崗位。但一些州不顧衛生官員警告，急於重啟經濟活動，導致新冠病毒重新激增，企業生產面臨新的阻力，正引起美聯儲越來越多的關注。
投資者對新冠疫情立場愈發謹慎，美聯儲對經濟的評論聽起來有些暗淡。目前有理由為之擔心，因為還難以判斷疫情何時能得到控制。若美國貨幣政策或財政政策進一步放寬，黃金有望在年底之前上沖千九關口。
