由於美伊關係緊張，加上疫情在全球範圍的蔓延，全球經濟受到大幅重創，央行推行寬鬆刺激政策，美股遭受巨大打擊，讓市場的避險情緒居高不下，對於黃金多頭有著明顯的推動作用。
新年伊始，美國空襲炸死在伊拉克境內的伊朗高階軍官蘇萊曼尼，伊朗隨後導彈襲擊伊拉克境內駐紮有美軍的外國軍事基地以示報復，促使投資者湧向安全資產，金價升穿1600美元關口，並刷新近七年高位。
隨著各州經濟重啟速度的加快，第二波疫情高峰也隨之呈現出反彈之勢。以亞利桑那、佛羅里達、北卡羅萊納等州為首的美國各州在幾天內疫情急速上升。美國專家警告稱，形勢非常嚴峻，控制疫情的“窗口”正在關閉。
為嚴格控制疫情而出臺的社交疏離措施令美國經濟戛然而止，引發一大波裁員，美國為期113個月、史上持續時間最長的就業增長週期戛然而止。
美聯儲主席鮑威爾更是悲觀認為，在找出新冠病毒的有效療法或疫苗之前，企業活動停停開開的局面還要持續數個月。這次衰退的規模和速度是現代歷史上前所未有的，比二戰以來的任何一次衰退都嚴重。過去十年的就業增長已經被抹殺了。
美聯儲3月3日緊急宣佈降息，將基準利率下調50個基點，同時對應下調超額存款準備金利率50個基點至1.1%。這是其自2008年金融危機以來首次在計畫會議之外降息。但在不到兩周之後的3月16日，美聯儲再度意外降息75個基點，聯邦基金利率區間下限降至0，並啟動無限制購債進程，強調將利用“所有工具”支撐美國經濟。
歐洲央行決定，在2020年6月至2021年6月期間，將TLTRO III操作的利率下調至比同期歐洲體系主要再融資操作的平均利率低50個基點，對於符合條件的淨貸款達到貸款績效門檻的交易對手，2020年6月至2021年6月期間的利率將比同期的平均存款安排利率低50個基點。歐洲央行還擴大了緊急抗疫購債計畫。
世界黃金協會表示，疫情對全球經濟的影響以及未來可能導致的社會變化仍未明確，此類不確定性以及未知的央行政策支持力度，可能會持續驅動黃金的投資需求；協會仍然認為全球各國央行將仍是今年黃金的淨買家。
