5月21日，現貨黃金重新走弱，市場認為病毒疫苗的壓法已經有了明顯進展，經濟復蘇的預期也有了顯著的提升，當前全球經濟體可能會進一步推出新的刺激措施，同時美聯儲也沒有參與負利率的話題，放慢了美元的弱勢走向。
美國研究人員週三宣佈，兩項對猴子的研究可提供一些最初的科學證據，證明感染新冠病毒康復後可產生避免再次感染的免疫力，這一樂觀跡象預示著目前正在研發的新冠疫苗或將取得成功。
美國是受疫情衝擊最嚴重的國家，確診病例已超過158萬，逾9.4萬人喪生。美國經濟預計將以史上最快速度萎縮，因企業普遍關閉以限制疫情擴散，數以千萬計的美國人失業。
英鎊兌美元反彈至評判1.2236附近，因日內公佈的英國5月PMI資料向好。但產業仍處於萎縮狀態，而上日公佈的英國4月通脹率降至2016年8月以來最低，反映出新冠疫情有可能導致英國經濟嚴重衰退。
這促使人們押注，英國央行可能將利率降至零以下。英國週三(5月20日)還首次以負收益率標售公債，意味著英國政府的借款實際上獲得了回報，因為投資者同意收回的資金略低於借出的規模。
歐盟負責英國脫歐事務談判的首席代表巴尼爾週三表示，英國不會自動享有歐盟之前給予其他交易夥伴的任何利益，“如果英國不準備接受確保競爭公開和公平的保證，就不能期望高品質的歐盟單一市場准入。”
美聯儲已將利率降至近零水準，購買了數萬億美元的債券，並啟動了一系列貸款計畫，其中包括一項針對中型企業的貸款計畫。據週三公佈的會議紀要顯示，美聯儲官員在4月的政策會議上討論的想法包括：對短期利率路徑提供更詳細的指引，以及將長期利率限制在低位。
美國所有50個州都已在尋求重新開放，至少是部分重啟。這提高經濟將逐步恢復增長的希望，但也帶來了出現更多感染者和死亡病例的風險，美聯儲官員擔心疫情可能產生更持久的影響。但是在決策如何推行新的刺激措施上，美聯儲顯然也是有底線的，即不考慮在他們看來可能產生嚴重副作用的“負利率”政策，此舉有助於限制美元跌勢。
