4月20日，美国原油市场大幅度走低，尤其是05合约出现暴跌，由于需求下降是的原油价格大幅下跌，同时市场交易力量也纷纷结束当前交易单，同时还有大量沙特的低价原油正向美国港口出发。
这种混乱并不意味着美国原油储备被填满，美国正在填充储备但还远未填满，部分地区毫无疑问会面临压力，需求将保持低迷。
主流经纪商通知旗下客户，明晨美原油相关品种将按收市时的买卖价强行平仓；与到期合约相关的所有待处理的挂单和止损/限价单将被取消，并将实现当时的任何浮动盈亏。
此前全球主要产油国同意将原油产量减少10%，以支撑油价，这是其史上最大幅度的减产。但从油价的表现来看，这样的减产仍然是不够的。
美国石油之都的原油价格正危险地接近于零，在页岩革命的发源地德州，买家竞购原油的报价仅为每桶2美元，较一个月前大幅下跌；实物桶价值的暴跌增加了德州石油生产商可能很快就不得不付钱给客户，让他们从手中夺走原油的可能性。
在需求崩溃、供应膨胀和储存能力有限的三重利空中，负价格已经触及美国石油市场更为隐晦的角落；美国第一个出价低于零的原油是一条被称为怀俄明州沥青酸的内陆小原油流，上个月的价格为每桶负19美分；在德克萨斯州，价格正朝着这个方向发展。
WTI油价越来越低迷之际，一些美国的石油公司沮丧地发现，有大批来自沙特的低价原油正直扑美国的港口。
这些油是3月和4月初装船的。3月上旬，沙特突然开打价格战，迅速引发全世界产油国纷纷降低售价，从而令原油供应在需求因疫情崩跌之际显得愈发过剩。
