8月27日，现货黄金震荡走弱，在美联储主席鲍威尔讲话前，市场难以出现单边趋势，同时投资者得知美联储即将调整政策框架，以助推通胀。目前美国通胀水平迟迟无法达到美联储设定额2%目标位，而且失业率在不引发物价上涨的情况下跌到比预期更低的水平。
美国失业率维持在两位数，即使获得的援助金额有所减少，每周仍有约100万人申请失业救济。消费者信心下降，成千上万的租房客面临着被房东驱逐的危险。
自新冠开始爆发以来，美联储已将利率降至接近零的水准，并将其资产负债表扩大了约3万亿美元，远远超过了欧洲央行和日本央行。投资者押注，美联储将在下个月出台新的政策框架，以应对持续的通胀低迷，黄金可能开启新一轮涨势。
美国通胀水平迟迟无法走高至美联储2012年设定的2%目标位，利率长期低于正常水平。未来若再碰上今年这样严重的经济衰退时，就几乎没有空间通过调降利率来提振经济。
最重要的是，鲍威尔如何告诉世人，长期来看高通胀率对他们是有益的。也就是说，不再期望年通胀率达到2%，而是让较长一段时间内的平均通胀率达到该目标，明确允许或许有几年物价增长较快，以弥补有几年物价上涨较慢的情况。
美联储政策通常是把超低失业率视为一个需要化解的风险，即在出现就业过热最初迹象的时候(往往伴随着物价上涨抬头)就开始加息。但过去几年美联储还获得了一大史无前例的教训，失业率可以在不引发物价上涨的情况下跌到比预期更低的水准。
鲍威尔当前面临极其困难的任务，他须要让公众相信，在一场可以已经让美国人民对政府机构丧失信任、并导致大量人口失业的疫情之后，美联储能够也将会履行自己的使命。
但分析师开始猜测，在货币政策对经济的帮助或许已近极限的环境下，美联储的新政策框架是否真比现有的更胜一筹。此前，美国国会议员没有就扩大重要的经济支持计划达成协议，其中包括已于上月末过期的每周600美元联邦失业救济金。
美元面临下行压力，市场对美元的情绪已经进入极端的看跌区域。美联储若实施更积极的宽松政策，往往会削弱美元；反之，若鲍威尔最终流露出的鸽派态度不及市场多数预期，我们将看到美元反弹。
