4月8日，由于美元指数止跌回升，现货黄金被限制涨势，但全球疫情尚未出现抑制现象，美股保持低位，悲观情绪不断蔓延市场。而欧盟财长未能就疫情打击的多国经济达成一致，将可能出现主权债务危机。
投资者对疫情的经济影响的担忧增加。全球新冠死亡病例逾8.2万，确诊病例超过143万。全球股市在连续两天上涨之后转弱。
美国是全球新冠病毒确诊病例最多的国家，逾40万人感染，近1.3万人死亡。纽约州是美国新冠肺炎疫情的震中，与邻近的新泽西州在周二(4月7日)均创下单日最高死亡病例数。
经济学人智库表示，疫情大流行对美国经济增长的影响将主要体现在第二季度，料GDP按季将收缩5.9%，较首季收缩1.3%扩大。报告认为，美国当局最初对疫情爆发的反应尤为差劲，使病毒迅速扩散。
考虑到遏制病毒实施的措施、3月下旬申请失业救济人数的激增以及加快病毒检测的进展缓慢，报告预计美国今年实际GDP将收缩2.9%，但这仅为乐观的基本情景预测，并假设2万亿美元的经济刺激计划可迅速落实。
欧盟财长未能就进一步支持受新冠疫情打击的多国经济达成一致。这次会谈旨在努力就支持各国政府、企业和个人的一揽子措施达成一致。会谈将在周四继续。
经济学人智库报告指称，在最坏的情况下，倘因遏制疫情大流行令发达国家财政收入减少并大幅增加公共开支，更有可能出现主权债务危机。特别是一些欧洲国家如意大利和西班牙，其财政状况在疫情爆发前本已薄弱，任何一个这些国家的潜在债务危机，均可能迅速蔓延至其他发达国家和新兴市场，将全球经济推向可能更深的低谷。
英镑兑美元小幅走强。据英国《镜报》此前报道，正在重症监护室接受治疗的英国首相约翰逊已经退烧，病情趋于稳定。约翰逊3月27日承认自己确诊新冠肺炎，本月5日因持续发热入院接受检查，6日被转移至重症监护室。
