据油服贝克休斯(Baker Hughes Inc)周五(4月10日)公布的数据显示，最近一周美国石油钻机数连续18周减少，至2010年12月的最低水平，加剧了加剧了石油钻探活动空前的紧缩状况。
贝克休斯数据显示，用来钻探石油的钻机数减少了42台，到目前的760台，以德州二叠纪盆地和鹰福特页岩地层区域减少得最为明显。紧接两周前钻机数的温和减少，加上这次又减少了42台，不难发现钻探石油的步伐一直在放缓。
交易者一直关注着每周的钻机数量因为他们在等待美国原油产量的下降从而使石油市场趋向平衡。自10月份以来，美国的钻机数量减少了一半还多，因为原油价格每桶下跌50美元使得钻探公司立刻缩减在页岩地层的钻探支出。
能源顾问WTRG经济公司总裁James Williams称，“本周钻机的数量有点出乎意料，数量的减少并不是轻易就发生的。显然，美国石油产量到下个月会到顶，今年下半年，我们就会看到预计的产量减少。”
Evercore ISI 的分析师James West称，即将到来的供应下降正好遇上夏天高峰钻探季节美国增加炼油厂，从而正好解决全球石油供给的不平衡。
美国西德克萨斯石油(WTI)基准5月交付的石油期货在纽约商品期货交易所下午2点08分上涨0.5美元报51.29美元/桶，相比6月20日52周以来最高点107.73美元/桶下跌了52%。
钻探缓慢并没有真正削弱美国石油的产量，因为更大的以及产油丰富的页岩井还是使产量在3月份创记录。美国能源信息署(EIA)数据显示，上周美国原油日产量增加1.8万桶，至940万桶/日。
WTRG Economics分析师Janelle Nelson称，“要想产量趋于平和还需要花上一点时间，未来钻机数也许还会减少，但是他们在用最好的钻探人员钻探产量最高的优质井。
高盛集团(Goldman Sachs)周一(4月6日)表示，美国的石油产量已显示接近顶部。
高盛分析师包括Damien Courvalin称，“美国石油的再平衡正在进行中，但我们发现，目前的石油钻机数正指向美国原油的存货会在今年夏天炼油厂周转期时增加。
EIA数据显示，截至4月3日的一周，原油库存又增加了1090万桶，至4.824亿桶的新纪录。
石油输出国组织(OPEC)是导致全球过剩的“罪魁祸首”，该组织几乎占了全球石油总产量的40%，且抵制减产。据Oil Movements称，OPEC本月每天的原油输出将增加20万桶。
高盛指出，“原油价格必须在近几个月内保持低位这样才能使已经足以再平衡全球石油市场的美国石油产量下降。虽然美国钻机数量的减少已超出我们的预计，但是还是不够。”
贝克休斯数据还显示，最近一周天然气的钻机数增加3台，至225台，其他项目的钻机减少1台，至3台，使得总钻机数减少40台，至988台，是自2009年8月以来的最低水平。
