迪马斯未在第一轮投票中获足够当选票数

雅典12月17日 – 希腊议会在周三的第一轮投票中未能选出新总统，总理萨马拉斯(Antonis Samaras)还要设法争取到独立派以及小党派的20票，才能避免在明年初提前举行全国大选。
后面还将有两轮投票，外界原本就预期政府提名的候选人不会在周三取胜，不过投票结果还是低于很多人的预期，只达到投票前官方认为合适的最低限。
在300名议员当中，政府支持的候选人迪马斯仅获160票支持，其他135票反对，五票弃权。他至少要获得200票，才能在第一轮便当选总统。
希腊媒体原先猜测政府候选人可能获得161-167张选票，但只有五位反对党代表向迪马斯投出支持票，再加上执政联盟自己的155票，因而没能达到政府所希望的票数。
希腊总统为虚位元首，并没有太多实权，但若未能在国会中以超过六成的票数选出总统，则将导致提前大选。
民意调查显示，左翼激进联盟党将在大选中胜出，该党承诺将会重新协商希腊目前仍需要的国际援助协议，藉以维系其财政。
脸色铁青的萨马拉斯表示，他希望国会能够在12月23日及29日举行的剩余两轮投票中选出总统，以避免提前举行全国大选；若未选出总统，则希腊必须在2月初之前举行大选。
萨马拉斯在离开议场时向记者表示，“情势相当艰困，希腊国会议员必须意识到该国可禁不起冒险。”
神情愉悦的左翼激进联盟党领导人齐普拉斯表示，政府的“恐吓策略”已经失败。“他向记者说，“不能对民主进行要胁。”
第二轮投票将于12月23日进行，并有可能在12月29日进行最后一轮的投票，而最后一轮投票中取得胜利所需的票数降为180票。
