5月15日，現貨黃金價格探底回升，而市場對當前的貿易形勢抱有謹慎觀點。而美國4月零售數據意外下滑，美聯儲年內降息概率超過70%，同時有分析師表示，美國經濟到了衰退的境地。黃金受到支撐，持續上漲。而美聯儲內部對年內是否降息仍有分歧。
中美貿易摩擦近期升級。中國6月1日起將提高對包括冷凍蔬菜和液化天然氣在內的一系列美國進口商品的關稅，在與美國的貿易摩擦中予以回擊。此前特朗普將價值2000億美元的中國進口商品的關稅從10%提高到25%；還計畫對另外價值3000億美元的中國商品加征關稅。
最新公佈的美國4月零售銷售數據不及預期，且意外下滑，預示了低迷的未來通脹率。考慮到此前公佈的CPI數據依舊低迷，此次疲軟的零售銷售數據或將進一步加強市場對美聯儲的降息預期。
不過儘管從2018年下半年起，美國已開始對中國部分商品加征關稅，但2018年美國貨物貿易逆差中有4192億美元來自中國，較2017年的3736億美元擴大了12.2%。事實表明，美國對中國商品加征關稅，沒能縮小美國對華貨物貿易逆差。
美國堪薩斯城聯儲主席喬治週二表示，美聯儲無需把降息作為使通脹率接近2%目標策略的一部分。她認為，通脹低於目標的程度不大，特別是鑒於美國失業率處於低水準的情況下。
美國通脹在過去一年有所降溫，目前仍低於美聯儲2%的目標。經過數年的緩慢加息，美聯儲今年按兵不動，部分原因是消費者物價下降。但是當前美聯儲決策層中對年內是否需要降息仍存在較大分歧，這也是支撐強勢美元的主要動力。
分析師表示，美國經濟增長似乎“完全”依賴公債、公司債和抵押支持債券，要不是增加了數萬億負債，美國經濟本應已陷入萎縮。
過去五年名義GDP增長4.3%，但公共債務總額增長4.7%。在這種負債背景下，加上金融市場“已經沉迷於美聯儲的刺激政策”，對美國下一次經濟衰退來說這是“非常非常危險的時期”。
儘管美國不會很快走向衰退，但美國經濟顯示出一些弱點。引用了花旗經濟數據變化指數，該指數已降至金融危機以來最低水準。
美國股市和債市在走向震盪，在“充滿信心地”做多黃金。他從1190美元開始就一直作多黃金。金價將站上每盎司1300美元。
