1月26日，由於感染病例飆升，美國刺激法案的推進和規模讓人質疑，弱化貴金屬對扛通脹的魅力。同時也有內部人員成刺激法案可能在四到六周內無法通過，美元指數難以維持反彈勢頭，限制金價下跌空間。
美國眾議院週一將前總統特朗普在演說中煽動支持者發起暴亂攻擊國會大樓的指控送交參議院，特朗普的二度彈劾由此正式啟動。預計參議院將在2月9日開始對彈劾特朗普的條款進行審理。
在1月13日就彈劾特朗普舉行的投票中，民主黨獲得10位共和黨眾議員的支持。在兩黨勢均力敵的參議院，民主黨人將需要17位共和黨議員的投票才能宣告特朗普有罪，並剝奪其今後擔任公職的權利。
參議院的目標是在2月初針對前總統特朗普的彈劾審判開始之前通過新冠紓困立法。但在特朗普任內因2017年減稅和將近5萬億美元的疫情支出而出現赤字後，共和黨人希望重回財政保守主義，對大規模紓困和擴大舉債表示擔憂。
參議院多數黨領袖舒默警告稱，經濟刺激法案可能在四到六周內無法通過後。舒默還表示，民主黨議員可能嘗試利用一個程式繞過共和黨議員的阻撓，藉以通過總統拜登新冠救助法案的大部分內容，且可能以簡單多數票加以通過。
投資者上周增加對美元的看空押注，認為預算和貿易赤字將拖累美元下跌。倉位數據顯示，上周美元空頭押注觸及近10年最高。然而空頭重新進入守勢，等候民主黨的大型疫情紓困計畫能否在國會過關，以及疫苗是否真能開始扭轉疫情。
一邊是劇院和餐館關門、航空公司和酒店大降價，一邊是政府已經或是準備發放抗疫紓困資金，到今年春季美國人可能已經積攢了高達2萬億美元的現金。對美聯儲而言，這既是祝福也是詛咒：一旦新冠疫苗控制住疫情，人們可以自由出行和購物，這會成為經濟復蘇的動力；但也會成為物價飆升的火花，決策者需要對此做出解釋。
美聯儲決策者毫不懷疑今年很多商品和服務的成本將上漲，但他們認為，這是回歸正常的一部分，並非更為持久的通脹問題的開始。鮑威爾和其他美聯儲官員在週三開始召開為期兩日的政策會議結束後可能會強化這一資訊。
