7月17日，現貨黃金重回千八關口，由於美國疫情病例大幅增加，政府應對措施沒看到明顯效果，經濟復蘇前景處於陰霾，對於黃金的多頭走向有著支撐作用。同時即使形勢好轉，民眾也不會馬上參與到經濟活動中，也讓市場對美國經濟有一定的悲觀。
科羅拉多州州長、民主黨人Jared Polis宣佈，他要求大多數人在室內公共場所、比如商店和企業內佩戴口罩。阿肯色州州長、共和黨人Asa Hutchinson頒佈了類似的州令。俄亥俄州州長、共和黨人Mike DeWine擴大了他稍早指令的範圍，將更多人囊括進來。
自從地方政府開始放寬經濟和社交限制後，美國南部與西部的病例數已經激增。為了阻止疫情擴散不少州重新採取限制措施，這種情況正向美國全境蔓延，經濟前景不確定性再度增強，黃金會受到投資者新一輪追捧。
就業恢復速度可能不夠快，不足以彌補失業數量。上周初請失業金人數為130萬，一度嘗試大舉重啟經濟的幾個州由於新冠病例激增而實施新的限制措施，續請失業金人數大幅增加。由於新冠病毒病例攀升，全美13000個學區春季因疫情擴散而關閉後，目前正在為如何安全地複課糾結。
美國國家過敏暨傳染病研究所所長福奇(Anthony Fauci)請求年輕人繼續遵守社交疏離等措施，以控制新冠病毒的傳播。他在接受臉書CEO紮克伯格直播訪問時稱：“請承擔起社會責任，成為解決方案的一部分，而不是問題的一部分。”
2020年第一季隨著各地實施防疫封鎖，全球債務竄升至創紀錄的258萬億美元，同時負債水準持續上升。成熟市場的債務與國內生產總值(GDP)之比超過392%，高於2019年的380%。美國的債務占成熟市場債務總額185萬億美元的一半。
目前美國還沒有一種明確的範本——在確保公眾健康的前提下重新開放經濟活動。對於高度依賴內需消費推動的經濟體，美國債務規模加速攀升幾乎是必然可以預料到的。更麻煩的是，特朗普經常和衛生官員唱對臺戲，會強化相當一部分消費者的觀望心態，即便形勢真的好轉了，民眾也可能不會馬上重新參與到經濟活動中去。這些因素傳遞給金融市場參與者，反映出來的結果就是黃金高位運行。
