今年一季度，美國經濟以5%的速度萎縮，2月份起陷入自大蕭條以來最嚴重的衰退。經濟學家預計，美國第二季度GDP折合成年率的環比降幅可能高達46%。倘若果真如此，美元將面臨新一輪大幅下挫。
一個多月前，許多州的企業在3月中關閉以減緩新冠疫情傳播後重啟。這些企業目前正在招兵買馬，但其他一些公司也在以幾乎相同的速度裁員。
失業率高企削弱了需求，並對企業投資產生了連鎖影響。今年第一季度，企業投資出現2009年年中以來最大幅度萎縮。冠狀病毒感染激增威脅到剛剛有所改善的企業投資。

儘管如此，《華爾街日報》/NBC新聞最近的一項聯合民意調查顯示，有54%的獨立選民對特朗普處理經濟仍表達了信任。CNBC 6月的民意測驗也顯示，在經濟管理上，特朗普仍然較拜登更受青睞。
拜登曾表示，他將把公司稅率從現在的21％提高到28％，年收入超過40萬美元的家庭也將增加稅收。無黨派人士稅收政策中心表示，拜登的稅收計畫將在未來十年內增加4萬億美元的政府財政收入。
