疫情期間美國政府繼續添亂，鮑威爾面臨國會拷問

由於市場對疫情的第二波爆發有著較高的擔憂情緒，加上中美兩國之間新出現的貿易緊張關係，美國經濟數據暗淡以及美元指數的走弱都讓支撐了黃金。同時美聯儲主席鮑威爾將向國會通報對於疫情的經濟措施。目前歐洲各國也出臺了更多政策以面對疫情。
由於目前市場充斥著多種不確定性，包括美國重啟經濟後新冠病毒疫情感染率的情況、美聯儲負利率政策預期、中美對峙等，市場因此預期復蘇長路漫漫，避險資產黃金在過去一周表現強勁。
美聯儲主席鮑威爾上周日(5月17日)晚間在發表廣播評論時稱，經濟破壞已經很嚴重了，現在對美國經濟而言，最重要的數據是與新冠疫情大流行有關的“醫療指標”。
鮑威爾說，失業率可能會達到25%然後才會開始下降，4-6月的國內生產總值(GDP)環比年率可能會顯示萎縮20%。這和1930年代的大蕭條時期類似。
距離3月預測經濟將出現V型復蘇已經過去數周時間，如今多數經濟學家和衛生官員給出了更悲觀的看法。不過鮑威爾表示，他認為仍不太可能出現那種程度的長期崩潰。
鮑威爾說：“如果我們對於經濟重啟方式考慮周全，這樣社交距離舉措的實施就能成功，試圖儘量避免疫情再次爆發……之後經濟就可以較快復蘇。假設不會出現第二次新冠病毒疫情，我想你會看到經濟在今年下半年穩步復蘇。經濟要完全恢復，人們就必須完全恢復信心，而這可能要等到疫苗問世之後。”
鮑威爾和美聯儲其他官員未來幾天將發言。鮑威爾週二將通過視頻出席參議院金融委員會聽證會，向國會通報應對新冠疫情的經濟措施。他的發言將受到密切審視，若其流露出更多悲觀姿態，黃金市場料將獲得更多支撐。
在即將舉行的6月會議之前，歐洲央行正在分析局勢，並補充說：“如果我們看到金融環境太緊，或者單個債券市場受到的壓力沒有反映經濟基本面，我們可以調整我們收購操作的規模或持續時間，無論如何我們都可以隨著時間和各市場領域的情況而靈活地進行分配。”
