5月12日，由於美元指數回落，現貨黃金重新走高，雖然美聯儲官員淡化負利率前景有所利好美元，但負利率不再是投資者無法觸碰的禁區，美國市場必須適應當前經濟環境，同時投資者對疫情二次爆發的擔憂有所升溫，也帶動了黃金的避險需求。
美元指數早盤一度觸及逾兩周高點100.440，接近一個多月以來區間的頂部，日內最大漲幅0.22%。美元受到美債收益率曲線趨陡的提振，隔夜10年期美債收益率升至0.7%上方，五年期和兩年期美債收益率也上漲。
新冠病毒疫情對經濟的損害已經迫使美聯儲推出前所未有的一系列刺激計畫，包括擴大公司債券購買規模，把一些投機級債券納入其中。即便原本看來是無法想像的“實施負利率”，也隨著時間的推移，起了微妙變化。
儘管美聯儲幾乎排除了負利率的可能，但疫情對經濟及金融市場帶來嚴重衝擊，美國經濟走向經濟大蕭條以來最嚴重衰退，已經迫使投資人認真思考這樣戲劇化的政策轉變意味著什麼。聯邦基金利率期貨顯示，到2021年6月聯邦基金利率將比0%低約1個基點。
隨著數以千萬計的美國人失業，他們對經濟低迷期間其財務狀況將受到的打擊變得更加悲觀，並擔心將面臨長期失業。而美國小企業正在迅速適應變遷的環境。
紐約聯儲週一公佈的一項調查顯示，在大多數州的美國人因新冠病毒大流行而被要求呆在家裏的一個月裏，美國消費者對失業的恐懼加劇，對獲得信貸或支付帳單的能力更加悲觀。
消費者預期將失業的機率升至2013年該調查啟動以來的最高水準。他們對薪資、消費的預期降至低位。對未來一年和三年的通脹預期僅小幅上升，但預估存在更多不確定性。
新冠病毒疫情在全球蔓延，已經導致近418萬人感染，逾28萬人死亡。然而，市場擔心第二波新冠疫情可能爆發，病患和病亡數量還會有質的躍升，多國計畫重啟經濟的進展黯然失色。
德國和韓國這些國家已放寬封鎖限制，但傳出新增病毒感染病例。新型冠狀病毒捲土重來可能會削弱全球經濟復蘇，人們原本寄望貨幣和財政刺激措施能推動經濟回升。
