4月16日，現貨黃金雖然重回漲勢，但美元指數的持續鞏固則限制了金價的漲勢，美國初晴失業金資料證明，由於疫情的封鎖措施，抹去了美國十多年來創造的就業機會，美國經濟處於嚴重的衰退之中，加劇對全球經濟的悲觀，強化了現金為王的需求。
截至4月11日當周，美國初請失業金人數錄得524.5萬，雖然不及預期的550萬，且明顯低於前值660.60萬，但過去四周累計初請失業金人數超過2200萬，依然足以證明全球最大經濟體正處於嚴重衰退之中。
美國3月新屋開工指數創1984年以來最大降幅。上日發佈的資料顯示，美國3月零售銷售出現創紀錄下跌，製造業產出創自1946年以來最大降幅。
隨著經濟活動“在所有地區急劇萎縮”，美國企業受到新型冠狀病毒疫情的衝擊。3月份期間，美國從擔心新型冠狀病毒疫情帶來的風險，轉變為全國大部分地方都在實行某種形式的“居家令”，數千萬人失去工作。
冠狀病毒疫情帶來的衝擊使美國幾乎陷入了自由落體狀態的經濟衰退，美聯儲決策者和經濟學家正密切關注美國企業所感受到的日益加劇的痛苦，他們試圖預測一旦解除社交疏離限制、企業能夠複產復工，經濟反彈的速度會有多快。
美國總統特朗普週三表示，資料表明美國新冠病毒新增感染高峰已過，並稱他將在週四的新聞發佈會上宣佈重新開放經濟的“新準則”。如果先前預設的5月初復工、哪怕是逐步復工決定能夠得到落實，短期內市場人氣將有所改觀，料限制避險黃金漲勢。
英國央行週四公佈的一項調查顯示，由於正感受到新冠疫情給經濟帶來的影響，英國銀行業預計未來三個月將增加對企業放貸，同時減少抵押貸款和消費信貸的發放。調查還顯示，企業的信貸需求為2007年開始此項調查以來最高。
疫情正在產生廣泛的影響，多數企業預計上月產出和銷售下滑，56%的企業稱3月的銷售和產出受到了影響，比例高於前一個月的47%。九成企業預計疫情影響將持續數月或更長時間。
