5月31日，國際金價刷新兩周高點，因美國表示將對墨西哥所有商品徵收關稅，美國政府想進一步升級和其他國家的貿易摩擦，利用關稅達到非經濟目標，進一步推動市場對全球經濟衰退的擔憂，迫使美聯儲在年內降息。
美國總統特朗普週四表示，將對墨西哥所有輸美商品徵稅，關稅起點為5%，從6月10日起生效，然後逐步調高，直至非法移民停止從墨西哥入境美國。
分析師表示：“墨西哥關稅消息在美國對中國加征關稅之際出現，這樣的時機引發市場動盪，與貿易相關的消息在短時間內突然爆出。因此匯市的反應相當激烈，但也往往很短暫。”
中美貿易緊張局勢升級的影響，已經開始在經濟數據中得到體現。中國5月官方製造業PMI重回榮枯線50下方，且較預期值低0.5個百分點至49.4，令投資人失望。這進一步加劇了市場恐慌。
美國總統特朗普30日還稱，美方在對華經貿問題上處理的很好。中國很想與美達成經貿協議。我們此前已達成協議，但中方破壞了協議。美對華進口產品加征的關稅正對中國造成破壞性影響，促使在華製造商離開中國前往越南等其他亞洲國家。
中國外交部發言人耿爽在週五的例行發佈會上回應稱，我們一再強調，美國動用國家力量，開動整個國家機器來打壓一家中國的民營企業，很不光彩，也很不道德。迄今為止，美方沒有拿出任何證據，來證明華為的產品或者服務存在安全風險，一切所謂的罪名都只是莫須有。美方當前採取的單邊主義和保護主義行徑遭到了美國國內民眾的強烈反對，也激起了國際社會的廣泛批評。
儘管外界已經逐漸適應美方的貿易霸淩做法，但利用關稅手段實現政治目標還是令外界頗感意外。對潛在新關稅擔憂導致市場情緒急速惡化，資金紛紛湧向黃金等避險資產。
美國通脹遠低於美聯儲設定的2%官方目標，因國內需求大幅放緩，這可能令美聯儲的觀點受到質疑。此前美國總統特朗普已多次敦促美聯儲降息。
美聯儲目前認為，造成物價上行壓力溫和的主要因素是暫時的。本月初暗示，短期內無意調整貨幣政策。投資組合管理服務、服裝和機票價格走軟，在一定程度上抑制了通脹。
庫存和出口驅動的經濟增長在第二季度初似乎已動能消竭。經濟放緩在很大程度上反映了特朗普政府去年大幅減稅和增加支出的刺激效應正在減弱。美國和中國之間的貿易對峙也殃及經濟。
市場越來越多地押注，鑒於美國溫和的通脹壓力和中美貿易衝突帶來的風險，美聯儲的下一步舉措可能是不得不降息，美元的好日子真可能到頭了。
