黄金ETF是一种追踪特定指数的金融衍生性商品，其追踪标的即为黄金现货，在扣除管理费与相关成本后，绩效与黄金现货表现几乎同步。
黄金ETF的运作原理，简单来说就是基金公司在收到投资者实体黄金之申购后，以实体黄金为基础，在市场上公开发行黄金ETF之受益单位，此受益权单位可在交易所自由买卖，并可透过初级市场进行申购与赎回。
最早的黄金ETF为2003年在澳洲挂牌的GoldBullion Securities(GOLD)，该档黄金ETF是由世界黄金委员会担任发起人，不过由于澳洲并非全球金融中心，因此规模较受限制。2004年，全球规模最大的黄金ETF SPDR Gold Trust 于纽约上市，近几年规模快速成长，到了2010年已突破1,200吨，较2004年成长12倍之多。
黄金ETF的特色如下：
1.交易方便：黄金ETF在交易所挂牌，交易量大，流动性佳。投资者利用黄金ETF布局金市，其进出远较实体黄金便利；投资者只要开设股票账户，便可进行交易。
2.投资安全性高：由于黄金ETF的基础资产是黄金现货，每单位的黄金ETF对应1/10盎司的黄金，投资者购买了黄金就等于间接拥有了实体黄金。此外黄金ETF之资产也存放于保管银行，投资者无须担心资产遭受挪用或侵吞，投资安全性极高。
3.低成本：和买卖实体黄金相比，投资黄金ETF可以免去保管、储藏等费用，也不会出现实体黄金常见之买卖价差。投资者仅需支付一年0.4%~0.5%左右之管理费，以及个别市场ETF交易之微薄手续费与交易税而已，其成本与直接购买实体黄金相比不可等同。
4.流动性强：黄金ETF在交易所挂牌，可以直接透过证券市场买卖交易，具有相当之流动性；除了次级市场的交易之外，投资者还可以透过初级市场进行申购与赎回，交易管道多元，流动性高。
5.可转换为实体黄金：黄金ETF在初级市场科透过进行实体黄金之申购与赎回；投资者若持有相对部分之黄金ETF，可申请转换为实体黄金。不过由于申购赎回其门槛高达十万个受益权单位，规模过于庞大，手续又相当繁复，还需要考量到搬运与配送之问题，因此少有人转换为实体黄金。
6.交易透明度高：黄金为全球交易商品，市场行情24小时运作，相关投资信息如金价、各国黄金持有量、央行黄金储备部分，甚至黄金ETF的持仓量之信息均相当透明，投资者可随时查询，操作也有相当明确。
7.可双向交易，操作灵活度高：黄金ETF除了买进持有之外，也可反手放空，操作灵活度远胜于实体黄金。
