几乎每一位投资大师级的人物都用过止损原则，都讲述过不止损导致损失的种种故事，不过，威廉·欧奈尔讲述的火鸡故事可以说最为精辟，最为传神。
故事是这样的：有一个人布置了一个捉火鸡的陷阱。他在一个大箱子的里面和外面撒了玉米，大箱子有一道门，门上系了一根绳子，他抓着绳子的另一端躲在一处，只要等到火鸡进入箱子，他就拉扯绳子，把门关上。一天，有12只火鸡进入箱子内，然后有一只偷溜了出来。他想：我等箱子里面有12只火鸡后，就关上门。然而他在等第12只火鸡回到箱内时，又有一只火鸡跑出来了。他想：我等箱内有11只火鸡后，就拉绳子好了。可是他在等待的时候，又有3只溜出去了。最后，箱内一只火鸡也不剩。
放手让亏损持续扩大，这几乎是所有投资人可能犯下的最大错误，这是出自投资大师威廉·欧奈尔的名言。
