得泰尔，天才投资人！
彼得泰尔喜欢呆在咖啡厅。在大学街（University Avenue）有一间名叫CaféVenetia的咖啡馆。彼特·泰尔的大部分产业几乎都设立在Café Venetia附近。
在这家咖啡厅里，人人都用苹果设备，他们看上去疲劳，嘴里却依然喋喋不休，话题离不开自己的创意和风险投资。
1998年夏季，刚刚来到旧金山区的23岁乌克兰程序员马克斯·列夫琴（Max Levchin）在斯坦福大学听了一场泰尔关于货币交易的演讲。
他们在帕洛阿尔托见了面，他们希望打造一个电子支付系统，让电子商务交易变得简单、统一和安全，这就是日后PayPal的雏形。2002年，泰尔就在这家咖啡馆和朋友艾伦·马斯克（Elon Musk）见面讨论要不要让PayPal上市，并达成了一致意见。
最终这家电子支付公司成功上市，市值约为12亿美元，成为“911”事件后第一起大型IPO。随后，PayPal以15亿美元的价格被eBay收购，泰尔也获得了人生中的第一桶金5500万美元。
财务自由的泰尔之后便投身于风险投资。他将于1996年创办的Thiel资产管理公司（Thiel Capital Management）更名为Clarium Capital Management，自己注入了1000万美元。从此，泰尔就开始耐心寻找具有前景的初创公司。
当时很少人青睐互联网领域，认为这是个危险的泡沫，但泰尔仍然信心满满。2004年夏季，霍夫曼和硅谷顽童肖恩·帕克（Sean Parker）把泰尔引荐给了扎克伯格，当时扎克伯格正在为Facebook寻找主要投资人。泰尔为当时估值不到500万美元的Facebook提供了50万美元启动资金，这是Facebook获得的首笔外部投资，这次投资为他赢得了7％的Facebook股份，并成为公司董事会成员。
尽管随后几年，泰尔卖掉了自己近一半的股份，剩余股份也因Facebook多轮融资而进一步稀释，但泰尔所持股份仍占3％左右。如果以Facebook上市后1000亿美元的市值计算，泰尔手中的股票价值有望达30亿美元，投资回报逾6000倍。
马克·扎克伯格创造了Facebook这个改变人类生活方式的奇迹，而彼得·泰尔（Peter Thiel），这位生于1964年的怪才正是这个奇迹的背后推手。美国的互联网界都记住了这个名字。
