国际知名人力资源机构Challenger, Gray and Christmas Inc. 1月9日公布，2013年12月份美国企业宣告裁员人数较前月（45,314人）减少32%至30,623人，创下2000年6月（17,241人）以来的13年半新低；与去年同期（32,556人）相比，12月份企业宣告裁员人数年减5.9%，为连续第3个月较去年同期减少。2013年，美国企业宣告裁员人数为509,051人，创下1997年以来的年度新低，较上年度523,362人减少3%；其中第四季企业宣告裁员人数为121,667人，较前季（128,452人）以及去年同期（137,361人）分别减少5.3%与11%。
该机构执行长John A. Challenger表示，通常来说12月的宣告裁员人数都会低于当年的平均值，一方面是因为圣诞节的传统气氛，另一方面也是企业对新年度有较乐观的展望；自2008年经济衰退以来，每一年的情况都持续较上一年度有所改善，虽然改善的速度仍然显得较为缓慢。
虽然2013年美国企业宣告裁员人数整体较上年度减少3%，仍有几个行业宣告裁员人数高于上年度；其中，金融业宣告裁员人数年增49%至60,962人，医疗业宣告裁员人数年增45%至52,638人，而工业品部门的宣告裁员人数更较上年度的26,103人接近倍增至51,864人。12月份，宣告裁员人数较多的行业包括计算机（5,578人）、医疗与产品（2,145人）、工业品（2,470人）、以及零售业（2,269人）等。
