9月21日，全球股票遭受到大面積拋售，美元出現巨大飆升，由於歐洲疫情重新抬頭，歐洲政府重新出臺相關封鎖措施，金價出現明顯下跌，而美元受此影響出現巨大漲幅。
華爾街主要股指週一觸及近七周最低，美元指數盤中上漲0.84%，錄得3月19日以來最大單日百分比漲幅。分析師稱，全球股票市場遭遇拋售，部分原因是市場對冠狀病毒病例數增加可能迫使官方重新出臺封鎖措施的擔憂，以及新一輪抗疫紓困財政措施面臨不確定性。
分析師表示：“在這些危險時期，黃金不再為投資者提供庇護所。相反，美元走強進一步給商品期貨市場帶來壓力，並使金價回吐漲幅。”
紐約商品交易所12月交割的黃金期貨價格下跌51.50美元，跌幅2.6%，收於每盎司1910.6美元，創7月24日以來的最低收盤價；盤中最低下跌至1885.40美元。至此黃金期貨價格已跌破其50日移動平均線1941.78美元，這意味著黃金的短期看漲趨勢線面臨威脅。市場技術分析師通常將50日移動平均線視為短期價格看漲與看跌之間的分水嶺。12月白銀期貨價格下跌2.74美元，跌幅10.1%，收於每盎司24.387美元，創7月31日以來最低收盤價。
金價較8月初觸及的紀錄高位下跌了近10%，因出臺進一步刺激政策的希望變得渺茫。除了已經成為法律的約3萬億美元援助之外，美國國會幾周來圍繞第五輪救助立法的規模和形式進行的磋商一直未能取得進展。滿地可銀行基本和貴金屬衍生品交易主管Tag Wong稱，美國國會在1月前就任何刺激計畫達成一致的機率漸近於零。
