4月14日，金价出现巨大涨幅，上涨近2%，刷新近七年半以来的最高位，由于疫情对全球经济的重创，并引发各国央行出台大规模经济刺激计划，市场纷纷将资金转入黄金等避险市场。
期货和现货价格之间的价差仍然很大，现货黄金相比COMEX 6月黄金期货折价超过30美元，由于实物黄金市场受到的干扰，最近几周以来一直呈现这种折价状态，这表明市场内流动性稀少，加剧了价格错位。
有大量避险买盘，目前存在对经济衰退/萧条的担忧，经济前景看起来相当严峻。美联储上周刚刚挹注2万亿美元，世界各地的其他央行也在做同样的事情；利率处于或接近于零，市场担忧不断，这为黄金升穿每盎司2000美元创造了一个完美的环境。
国际货币基金组织(IMF)周二表示，由于冠状病毒疫情导致经济活动停摆，预计2020年全球经济将萎缩3.0%，这将是1930年代大萧条以来最严重的经济滑坡。目前全球累计确诊病例数已近200万例，这迫使各国实施停摆措施，并促使央行出台支持举措。
美国尽责联邦预算委员会(CRFB)周一表示，新冠疫情导致美国经济急剧下滑和政府大规模救助支出，这将使美国2020财年赤字达到原先预估的接近四倍，触及创纪录高位3.8万亿美元，相当于美国国内生产总值(GDP)的18.7%。
在金价上涨的同时，全球股市也出现上涨，此前中国公布的贸易数据好于预期，且一些国家试图通过部分取消旨在遏制疫情的限制来重启经济。
