2月27日，现货黄金继续反弹，市场担心公共卫生事件爆发，资金涌入避险资产，同时担心旅游限制以及供应链中低端、需求下降等情况对经济造成的影响高于预期，美元指数录得新低，担心美国政府低估此次事件。
意大利已成为欧洲疫情爆发的前线，有528人感染。除了巴西，在阿尔及利亚、奥地利、克罗地亚、希腊、罗马尼亚、西班牙、瑞典和瑞士，所有确诊病例都是意大利人或最近去过意大利的人。
在日本，随着人们对2020年东京奥运会的担忧加剧，日本首相安倍晋三呼吁对未来两周的体育及文化活动，采取取消、延期或缩小规模的做法。
10年期美债收益率跌至纪录低点1.287%。之前，美债普涨是推动美元走高的最大因素，因全球公共卫生事件担忧激起对避险公债的需求。
但交易商紧张地关注公共卫生事件在全球的蔓延情况。美国确认首例来源不明的新冠病毒感染病例，进一步加重了对于疫病大流行的担忧。
部分交易商警告称，没有办法保证美元资产的避险地位屹立不倒，如果美国感染病例快速增加，市场对美元的信心可能迅速反转。
一些投资者观察到，仅仅是对疫情的忧心就已使得美国股市市值蒸发约2万亿美元，甚至在经济感受到疫情影响前，就掀起一波可能阻碍消费者支出的市场大跌。
市场持续低迷对美国经济的打击可能比中国停工、扰乱美国公司供应链带来的影响要大，因为这会直接影响到消费者，“美国消费者实际上是经济扩张与经济衰退之间的防火墙。”
全球新冠病毒病例增加，以及疫情可能在美国蔓延的警告导致股市下跌。这种波动性也意味着部分考虑到退休的消费者可能控制支出，“出于担心，你需要对前景更加谨慎，”
经济学家目前将新冠病毒可能对消费者信心的打击，视为美国有史以来持续时间最长的经济扩张周期面临的最大风险。如果全球最大的经济体美国都陷入了衰退，那么投资者对美元的信心或很快涣散。
