2016年年初以来，大宗商品价格跌声一片，但黄金价格却上涨6%，最高触及1131.02美元/盎司，很可能成为2016年表现最佳商品，以及收益最大的主要资产之一，黄金投资者亦成为极少数能保持微笑的投资者之一。
世界黄金协会投资研究负责人卡洛斯(Juan Carlos)称：“如我们所看到的，全球股市都在戏剧性下跌，保护资本的必要性增加，黄金从中获益。”黄金ETF也水涨船高，美国ETF黄金基金SPDR Gold Shares和黄金矿企股ETF累计分别上涨近7%。
有分析师认为，黄金价格上涨主要受整体大宗商品供过于求的压力以及中国经济增速放缓影响。年初以来原油价格累计跌18%，一度跌至26美元/桶，铜和钯等金属价格也大幅下跌。彭博商品指数在1月份曾经跌至自1991年以来最低水平。
默克投资公司创始人默克(Axel Merk)称，黄金是这轮走势的赢家，由于最没有工业用途，所以受全球经济放缓的影响最小。目前，默克所持资产中黄金占20%。
