在纽约的河边公园里矗立着南北战争阵亡战士纪念碑，每年都有许多游人来到碑前祭奠亡灵。美国第18届总统、南北战争时期担任北方军统帅的格兰特将军的陵墓，就坐落在公园的北部。陵墓高大雄伟、庄严简朴。陵墓后方，是一大片碧绿的草坪，一直绵延到公园的边界、陡峭的悬崖边上。
格兰特将军的陵墓后边，更靠近悬崖边的地方，还有一座小孩子的陵墓。那是一座很小又很普通的坟墓，在任何其他地方，你都可能忽略它的存在。它和绝大多数美国人的陵墓一样，只有一块小小墓碑。在墓碑旁边的一块木牌上，却记载着一个感人至深的故事：
故事发生在1797年。这一年，这片土地的小主人才5岁的时候，不慎从这里的悬崖上坠落身亡。其父伤心欲绝，将他埋葬于此，并修建了这样一个小小的陵墓，以作纪念。数年后，家道衰落，老主人不得不将这片土地转让。出于对儿子的爱心，他对今后的土地主人提出了一个奇特的要求，他要求新主人把孩子的陵墓作为土地的一部分，永远不要毁坏它。新主人答应了，并把这个条件写进了契约。这样，孩子的陵墓就被保留了下来。
沧海桑田，100年过去了。这片土地不知道辗转卖过了多少次，也不知道换过了多少个主人，孩子的名字早已被世人忘却，但孩子的陵墓仍然在那里。它依据一个又一个的买卖契约，被完整无损地保存下来。到了1897年，这片风水宝地被选中作为格兰特将军的陵园，政府成了这块土地的主人。无名孩子的墓，在政府手中依然被完整地保留下来，成了格兰特将军陵墓的邻居。一个伟大的历史缔造者之墓和一个无名孩童之墓毗邻而居，这可能是世界上独一无二的奇观。
又一个100年后，1997年的时候，为了缅怀格兰特将军，当时纽约市长朱利安尼来到这里。那时，刚好是格兰特将军陵墓建立100周年，也是小孩去世200周年的时间，朱利安尼市长亲自撰写了这个动人的故事，并把它刻在木牌上，立在无名小孩陵墓的旁边，让这个关于诚信的故事世世代代流传下去……
