當前很多分析師都認為全球現代經濟體現正處於崩潰邊緣，主要原因是債務的邊際作用正在崩潰，目前需要更多債務才能刺激經濟增長，同時每次出臺新的寬鬆政策，其邊際作用都在下降，容易導致惡性通貨膨脹。
“當前量化寬鬆對實體經濟的影響比之前的量化寬鬆行動要慢”，美聯儲的資產負債表每增加1美元，M1貨幣供應量就增加約0.32美元，相比之下，第一和第二輪量化寬鬆分別增加了0.96美元和0.74美元。
在2008年，次貸危機引發了經濟危機。正如三藩市聯儲最近的一項研究所示，當時R *進入負值區域。美聯儲可以降低利率，但是受到了不能跌破零利率的限制。

最後，貨幣政策的關鍵在於預期。通脹與通脹預期之間的高度相關性表明，通脹是自我強化的。在量化寬鬆政策出臺前後，人們曾預期，它可能導致通脹失控。在經歷了多輪量化寬鬆政策而沒有大幅推高通脹之後，人們可能已經普遍認識到，量化寬鬆不太可能導致通脹，因此現在消費的動力略有減弱。
