去年南非的铂金生产行业的罢工是该国历史上持续时间最长的罢工，由工会AMCU发起的罢工持续了5个月，是的南非的铂金产量受到130万盎司的影响，差不多是全球矿产的三分之一。
目前AMCU正在就黄金矿工的工资与矿企进行谈判，要求把低收入的矿工工资翻番，使得入门级矿工的工资能够达到1200美元。
AMCU称，自己代表了40%的黄金矿工。而另一大工会，NUM则要求工资增长80%。
南非曾经是全球最大的黄金生产商，直到2007年这一排名被中国取代。
南非的年黄金产量从曾经上世纪六七十年代的1000吨下降到了目前的160吨左右。
从黄金指数就能看出产量的下降，在1980年1月，该指数在359，而到了2015年，该指数只有48.4。也就是说南非2015年的黄金产量比1980年下降了80%。
1993年南非出售黄金的收入占GDP的3.8%，到2013年，这一比例下降到1.7%。1980年黄金生产占南非全部矿业生产价值的67%，而到2014年下降到了12.5%。
