沙特公开表示提高原油产量，势在争回原油市场。沙特石油部长纳伊米曾表示不愿失去市场份额，而之后的表现则印证了这个说法。即便近期石油需求疲软，但委内瑞拉，俄罗斯以及哈萨克斯坦的生产商发现，他们出口至亚洲，美国及欧元区这样的进口主力的份额部分被沙特所取代，因后者能够提供更大量、更便宜的原油。
石油输出国家组织(OPEC)中主要石油供应国所提供的原油很难追根溯源，因为原油合约是通过非公开直接销售，而非原油现货交割市场。但周日纳伊米的讲话中暗示沙特将提高石油销售产量。
纳伊米在演讲中非常注重措辞的使用，他表示沙特现在每天开采石油1000万桶。这个数字比沙特向OPEC提供的2月份的产量报告中的数字高35万桶，并且已接近产能极限。
与此同时，为让世人信服，纳伊米表示，如果石油需求量增加，沙特能做到增加产量。
PIRA的创始人和执行主席Gary Ross表示，通过PIRA与石油需求国家的研究以及相关人士的谈话表明，沙特将会在亚洲和美国输送更多的原油。Gary Ross也是第一个预测沙特在3月份的石油产量将升至1000万桶的专家。
在亚洲，部分中国精炼商现使用沙特的轻级油，以此取代之前使用的产自西非的原油。在美国，一些客户反映会倾向于使用沙特石油因其价格合理。Ross表示，造成沙特石油供给增加的因素是伊拉克原油产量减少，因伊拉克2月遭遇天气恶劣阻止原油开采。
Ross说：“如果石油需求增加，沙特表示会增产，所以前几个月石油需求增加，沙特也因此提供了更多的石油。依我看来，当前产量还在沙特的能力控制内，同时也能维持市场份额，当然一旦产量超过1000万桶以上，就有些勉为其难了。”
