美国政府停摆进入第三天，市场原先认为仅会关门数日的预期心理出现变化，担心会重蹈1996年关闭21日的覆辙，当时GDP因此损失1.4%。财政僵局迟迟未能被打破，造成美国股、汇市下挫，黄金价格则反弹上冲至每英两1300美元上方。
美国预算协商持续卡住，CMC Markets分析师Desmond Chua指出，「一开始相信政治僵局只是昙花一现的投资人，开始怀疑1996年政府瘫痪21天的戏码将会重演。」
美国政府于10月1日正式停摆，80万名联邦政府雇员被迫放无薪假，许多分析师相信美国国会会尽速寻求方法终结预算僵局。但一天过一天，总统欧巴马和国会领袖们之间的预算谈判似乎毫无进展，市场开始担心政府停摆时间拉长，并对经济造成负面影响。
美股三大指数周三收盘连袂下跌，道琼工业指数下跌0.39%至15133.14点。美元兑欧元汇率跌至8个月来最低水平，来到约1欧元兑1.3607美元。相对地，黄金价格周三上涨2.2%至每英两1316.4美元后，昨日拉回0.7%，但仍维持在1300美元水平之上。
研究调查机构Logic Advisors分析师指出，在形成「双底」线型之后，第4季黄金期货价可能反弹至每英两1425美元。
而美国部分政府断炊，也造成国防承包商以及一部分制造业公司，陷入裁员和中断生产的危机。联合技术公司（United Technologies Corp.）准备让旗下的Sikorsky员工放无薪假，该公司为美国国防部制造黑鹰直升机。
