6月4日，美國公佈了市場密切關注的5月30日美國初請失業金人數資料，資料增長情況超出市場於其，並且在資料公佈後現貨黃金出現了短線上漲，同時市場也密切關注即將公佈的非農資料。
具體資料顯示，美國截至5月30日當周初請失業金人數實際公佈187.70萬，預期值184.3萬，前值212.3萬。
國上周初請失業金人數下降至200萬人以下，為三月中以來首次，但仍處於令人驚訝的高位。初請失業金人數從三月晚些時候的紀錄高位回落，最近的資料顯示，勞動力市場的至暗時刻已經過去。調查還顯示，消費者信心、製造業和服務業雖然在5月份處於較低水準，但已趨穩定，這表明由3月中旬為控制新冠病毒蔓延幾乎關閉全國而引發的低迷正在觸底。
許多初請資料反映的是當前的裁員，因企業更廣泛地開始調整未來一年的前景，即使經濟開始重新開放，新的失業崗位仍在繼續堆積。
分析認為，雖然隨著企業重開，最糟糕的失業情況可能已經過去，但經濟學家預計，在3月中旬為控制疫情蔓延而實施封鎖期間，約有四分之一的工人被解雇或暫時休假。儘管政府實施了薪資保護計畫，但許多企業仍料將破產，因此這部分工人不太可能重新找到工作。
此前一天美國自動資料處理公司（ADP）3日公佈的資料顯示，受疫情衝擊，5月份美國私人部門共削減276萬個就業崗位。同時，自動資料處理公司將美國私人部門4月份就業崗位削減數量從2023.6萬個調整至1955.7萬個。
美國勞工部5日將公佈5月份就業報告。經濟學家預計，5月份美國失業率或繼續攀升至近20%。4月份美國失業率為14.7%，是上世紀30年代經濟大蕭條以來最高值。
