纸黄金其实是一种虚拟黄金，其价格定位是基于某个品种的黄金，如上海黄金交易所推出的黄金9999，黄金9995等，将其兑换为以人民币计价的黄金报价方式以后，就可以进行银行纸黄金账户的交易。银行在买入一定的黄金储备以后，按照人民币计价出来的黄金品种，推出纸黄金开户及投资业务。
纸黄金交易的实际形式为，当投资者在银行办理纸黄金开户手续以后，就获得一个专用于投资纸黄金的存折账户，银行对投资者报出不同黄金品种的买入和卖出价，投资者则选金入市交易，而纸黄金的资金投入为本金交易，在中国国内，不同黄金品种均以克作为计量单位，例如黄金9999的买入价为每克286元的话，在纸黄金交易电子盘上显示为286元/克，投资者买入1克的话，就需要投入人民币286元，每克300元的话，买入就需投入人民币300元。
由于纸黄金是本金交易，所以不存在像贵金属现货那样的杠杆保证金交易机制，所以投资者是不能在没有买入纸黄金的情况下，作出卖出决定，只能通过低吸高抛方法套取纸黄金交易收益。且纸黄金没有实物交割或提取流程，因此投资者只能按纸黄金报价产生的差额来确定获利空间，因此纸黄金投资者作出的每一手黄金买卖都是“虚拟”的，所以参与纸黄金交易的多空头寸数量，对真实的黄金现货或实物金交易并没有任何作用。
纸黄金也用于作为国际性的账面资产，又称特别提款权，主要用于增加国际储备以调节国际收支逆差。它在创立初期是用黄金来定值的，虽然现在特别提款权已经和黄金脱钩，但纸黄金的名称则沿用了下来。
