从传统的意义上说，纸黄金交易是不存在保证金这一费用的，因为当你在投资纸黄金时，是按即时纸黄金价格支付的100%的资金，所以不存在杠杆式交易，而杠杆式交易只存在可以双向操作的黄金投资产品中，从前的纸黄金只能单向交易，即只能买涨不能买跌。
由于纸黄金具有全资金交易、单向操作的特性，所以其交易灵活性运低于双向交易的黄金期货和现货品种，而随着中国大陆个人投资产品的多样性增加，现时的纸黄金成本投入仅需3000-4000元即可。另外，一些纸黄金代办业务的商业银行也推出了纸黄金的双向交易机制，如中国工商银行推出了贵金属双向交易产品，对纸黄金这一黄金投资品种添加了双向交易的功能，现时中国建设银行业跟随工行推出了可以双向交易的纸黄金，这种新型的纸黄金交易品种，不存在杠杆设置，所以交易资金也是遵循百分百本金的原则。
在进行纸黄金交易品种的投资过程中，每交易一笔空单，纸黄金交易系统中将会自动为客户生成一个保证金账户，保证金的账户余额为客户完成该笔交易后所剩下的本金余额。纸黄金交易系统将会根据客户的本金余额及持仓浮动盈亏，实时监测客户的持仓保证金比例变化，当个人的保证金比例低于50%时，系统将及时向客户提出加仓的预警信号，提示客户补充保证金。当个人保证金比例低于20%时，若客户仍未对纸黄金交易单进行平仓，系统将自动对客户的纸黄金保证金交易账户进行强行平仓。
利用纸黄金保证金达到双向的纸黄金交易机制，与同为双向操作的现货及期货相比，由于纸黄金保证金账户没有杠杆设置，其风险较现货投资大大减少，同时也适应了不同投资者的贵金属买卖产品需求。
