自古以来，白银就一直与黄金一起，被作为财富的象征。
银的化学符号是Ag，来自拉丁文Argertum，是”浅色、明亮“的意思。因为银的颜色是白色，所以被称为“白银”。
白银不仅有着良好的电热传导特性，还具有较高的感光性和发光特性，被应用于工业、摄影、首饰、货币制造等方面。
与黄金相比，白银因供应充足且价值较低，故更多且更早地应用于造币，进入流通领域，很多国家均建立银本位制，把银币作为主流货币。
作为一种贵金属，白银保值避险的功能也非常突出。1971~1981年间，美元贬值了50%，而以美元为标价的银价却上涨了近5倍。
