伦敦黄金市场协会（LBMA，下文简称协会）正式建立与1987年12月14日，协会主要充当其成员及其他市场参与者的协调人身份，同时也是市场和监管者的重要联系桥梁。
伦敦黄金市场协会的历史可追溯到17世纪，但是一般认为标志着市场结构和会员之间合作的开始是1897伦敦白银定价机制和1919的伦敦黄金定价机制；1980年前，伦敦黄金定价机制的5个会员在英国市场上一直占据主导地位，随着黄金、白银、石油价格的暴涨和不断生机的国际紧张局势，在全球范围日益增加的关注中，国际参与者流向伦敦，推动了协会走向今天作为黄金投资国际舞台中心的进程。
相对于交易所环境的场外交易市场，在这里，会员与会员，会员与客户之间的交易一般以委托人对委托人直接交易的方式为基础，即包括信用风险在内的所有风险都由交易双方承担；会员与会员之间的交易一般以标准交易所的量进行，但在伦敦金交易平台上与客户促成交易合同时，则会根据不同数量、质量、材料品种、记息日和交付地点提供不同报价；但是由于伦敦黄金市场是一个批发市场，与客户的最小交易量通常是1000盎司黄金又或50000盎司白银。
