何谓之标金？从汉语字典里我们可以查到，标金在古今年代有两种含义，而后一种含义由前一种含义衍生而来，在旧时，标金俗称“金砖”，是旧中国时期标准金条的简称，现阶段我们所说的标金，指的是实物黄金市场上的标准投资金条，标金的制作，是按照国际统一标准，在黄金采掘以后，加工浇铸成条块状的黄金。
旧中国时期的标金，长约2斤，宽厚各约5分，在标金上面铸有铸造金号的名称，铸造年份，重量大小和铸有“标金”字样，当时较为著名的标金金条有上海标金、天津标金、北平标金等3种。
由于世界各国黄金市场上，各个不同的黄金加工商出售的标金规格不尽相同，但它们基本都是根据传统的国际法则，选择通过市场认同的精炼厂，由精炼厂提供的黄金条物为标准金条，重量为10.09公斤至13.8公斤之间，标金的纯度不能低于99.5%。同时标金也可以用于对黄金进行原材料的再加工操作。
目前在全球性的黄金市场上，比较常见的标准金条规格有400盎司、100盎司、10盎司，最小的为1/4盎司等规格。重量有12.5公斤、500克、100克，最轻的为1克等规格。按标金的纯度上看，由于不能低于99.5%，一般在外国黄金市场，如伦敦、美国和新加坡等地的标金纯度为99.5%，中国香港和台湾地区黄金现货的标金纯度也为99.5%，内地如上海黄金交易所或天津贵金属交易所推出的标金纯度一般是99.99%和99.95%。
标金如何交易？标准金条采用订金付款的方式，在实物黄金市场上进行投资性的贵金属现货交易，投资者可以选择在合约交易日的当天交割，也可以申请延期交割，这需要引入延期补偿费来平抑供求矛盾。
对于实物黄金投资者而言，购买标金可以起到长期保值的作用，由于金饰产品和纪念性金币的加工费用较高，且变现性不强，黄金回购手续较为繁杂。标金则采取与黄金现货延迟交易相似的交易方式，为广大的黄金投资者提供了黄金投资理财的多方向选择。
