根据操作方向的不同，套期保值的类型又分为买入套期保值和卖出套期保值，其中买入套期保值是指买入期货合约防止现货价格上涨而遭受损失，而卖出套期保值则刚好相反，其是要卖出套期保值来防止现货价格下跌。
一般来说，要进行套期保值的投资方一般都是首饰加工企业和金矿开采商。不过其操作方向会不同，因为首饰加工企业是对已经购入的黄金进行加工再出售，买入黄金的价格越低越好，因此其需要规避的是价格上涨的风险，所以其是要进行买入套期保值的操作，而金矿开采商作为黄金供应商，其要规避的是价格下跌的风险，所以其是要进行卖出套期保值的操作。
