霍英东从海人草发家
1945年，战争刚刚结束，大批的战后遗留物资在香港岛上堆积如山，当时的港英政府准备拍卖这些剩余物资。年轻的霍英东看中了其中的40台轮船机器。可那时的霍英东一无所有，为了获得进入拍卖会的资格，他向妹妹借了100港元。在拍卖会上，霍英东以1.8万港元中标。100元尚需向别人借来，他又上哪去找1.8万?他马上转向朋友推销这40台机器，朋友愿意出价4万元买下。这样，霍英东获得了平生的第一桶金——2.2万港元。
1954年，霍英东在一次偶然的机会，听人说起澳门有一家公司正在四处收购海人草，每磅可卖到1美元。霍英东兴奋不已，他在确认了收购公司的信誉后，倾其所有带了一队人马奔赴东沙岛采集海人草。
海人草生长在2至7米深海里，它一会儿潜下去，一会儿浮上来，有时候一天也采不到半筐。这些“寻宝者”上面烤烈日，下面是海水蒸，还有锋利的贝壳，一不小心就会划破脚板，血流不止。没有淡水，无法洗澡，身上又腥又臭，奇痒难忍。
最可怕的是在海上作业时一旦突遇台风，就可能船毁人亡。一日，霍英东和两名工人驾驶的电动船遇上了台风，没有人辨得清东南西北，霍英东拼命把住舵。时间一分一秒过去了，渐渐地，风浪小了，天也黑了下来，死里逃生的3个人都瘫软在船上。风浪刚刚过去，袭来的黑夜又给了3个人新的恐惧。“要是遇上鲨鱼就什么都完了!”船在黑黢黢的海上漂了几个小时，3个人忍不住抱头痛哭。突然，霍英东看见远处有一点光影在摇晃，一股从未有过的狂喜使他大呼：“我们得救了!”岛上几近原始人的生活和无法容忍的寂寞使很多人放弃了，但霍英东却没有，他连续三次带着工人走上这个荒凉的小岛，取得了发迹的第一桶金。
回首多年创业史，霍英东对自己曾有过一段中肯的评价：“我一向喜欢接受挑战，愈是艰苦的事情，我愈要做好。”
