与牛顿的一掷千金相比，马克思的炒股规模小得多。1864年，马克思当时在伦敦做研究工作。经济上他一直比较拮据，依靠恩格斯等友人的资助；健康上也不太乐观，医生对他的忠告就是不可以从事紧张和长时间的脑力劳动。囊中羞涩和脱离工作的滋味，让他感觉到不快乐。当年5月，马克思的一个朋友去世，在遗嘱中特意请人把600英镑的遗产赠与马克思。对于马克思来说，朋友的这次遗赠不仅是雪中送炭，还给了他在股市小试牛刀的机会。
当时英国刚颁布《股份公司法》，英国的股份公司又开始飞速发展，股票市场也呈现繁荣景象，股价波动较大。有了这笔资金，经济学造诣颇深的马克思便决定投资英国股市，一为休闲，二为体验一下股民生活，赚些生活费用。于是他参考伦敦金融时报指数回升的好时机，分批次购买了一些英国的股票证券，之后他耐心等待市场变化，在他认为政治形势和经济态势提供了良好的投资机会，股票价格开始上升一段时间后，就迅速地逐一清仓。通过这一番炒股操作，马克思以600英镑的本金赚取了约400英镑的净利润！对于这段经历，马克思颇认为有趣，他在写信给一个亲人时特意提到：“医生不许我从事紧张和长时间的脑力劳动，所以我——这会让你大吃一惊——做起投机生意来了……主要是做英国的股票投机，我用这个办法已经赚了400多英镑。”
