从前甲、乙两个人，他们相约去海边捡漂亮的的石头和贝壳，到了海边后，甲一路走一路捡，很快就就收集到了一整筐好看的石头和贝壳。但乙的筐里只有两样东西，分别是一块他认为是最漂亮的石头，和一块最精美的贝壳。甲就笑乙：“你为什么石头和贝壳只拿一个啊？”乙就说：“漂亮的石头和贝壳虽然多，但我只选一个最漂亮的就够了。”甲笑了笑没说什么。
但在回去的路上，甲感到背上的负担很重，越走越累，最后只能不断地将框里最差的石头和贝壳逐一丢掉，回到家的时候，他的筐里结果只剩下一块石头和一块贝壳。
