美国劳工部10月22日公布，经过季节性因素调整后，2013年9月非农业就业人数较前月增加14.8万人，低于路透社调查经济学家平均预估的18万人增幅；其中民间就业人数增加12.6万人，低于彭博社预估的18万人增幅，政府部门增加2.2万人。9月失业率下降至7.2%，则是创2008年12月以来新低，经济学家原先预期将维持在7.3%不变。
美国8月份非农业就业人数增幅则自16.9万人上修至19.3万人。1-9月美国非农就业人数平均月增17.87万人，略低于2012年平均的18.08万人。此外，受到政府关门的影响，10月份就业报告将自原定的11月1日推迟至11月8日公布。9月劳动参与率较前月持平为63.2%，此为1978年8月以来新低，就业人口比率同样较前月持平为58.6%。9月份，长期失业人口（至少27周）较前月基本持平为410万人，占总失业人口比例为36.9%；过去12个月，长期失业人口减少72.5万人。
9月民间非农业部门平均每小时工资增加3美分或0.1%至24.09美元，较去年同期增加2.1%。每周平均工时较前月持平为34.5小时，其中制造业员工每周平均工时较前月持平为40.8小时，平均加班时数同样较前月持平为3.4小时。9月制造业就业人数增加2千人，其中耐久品工业月增9千人，非耐久品工业月减7千人。
在其他产业方面，建筑业较前月增加2万人；矿业与伐木业月增4千人；服务业月增10万人，其中零售业月增2.08万人，交通与仓储业月增2.34万人，信息业月增4千人，金融业月减2千人，教育与医疗业月增1.4万人。
