2021年1月1日起，英國退出歐洲單一市場，開始真正意義上的“脫歐”行動，雖然英國和歐盟在經過艱難談判後最終達成協議，但雙方仍需要面臨短期調整和長期的磨合。同時蘇格蘭獨立風波再現，蘇格蘭可能會重新加入歐盟。
根據英歐協議，雙方商品貿易將繼續享受零關稅、零配額的待遇，避免了大規模貿易成本增加。對於受疫情衝擊的英、歐經濟而言，這無疑是利好消息。
與“無協議脫歐”相比，這份協議讓雙方在很大程度上得到“解脫”。但從短期來看，即使有新協議保駕護航，英歐貿易流暢度仍不比從前。如何儘快適應新的貿易關係，是雙方政府機構和貿易企業都將面臨的挑戰。
分析人士表示，即日起，英歐人員和貨物流動可能不比從前，新增貨物邊檢等手續也會增加不確定性，距離歐陸最近的多佛爾港很可能“車滿為患”。英國政府已宣佈建立邊境管控中心，通過技術手段即時監測分析貨物和人員入境，以便將可能出現的邊境混亂降至最低。
在貨物貿易領域，英國商會總幹事亞當·馬歇爾表示，雙方貿易仍面臨著“巨大的、新的非關稅壁壘”。威爾士農場主協會分析認為，四分之三的威爾士食品和飲料出口目的地是歐盟，明年預計非關稅壁壘成本將上升4%至8%。對於英國汽車行業來說，即便達成貿易協議，行業成本也將增加141億英鎊（1英鎊約合1.37美元）。
分析人士認為，相比貨物貿易，英國的支柱產業之一金融服務業面臨更大困境。金融服務業在歐盟成員國的准入程度將無法與“脫歐”前相提並論。英國雷丁大學國際商務關係專家拉傑尼什·納魯拉認為，英國下一步必須就多個與金融服務有關的行業與歐盟展開重點談判，如銀行、金融、保險及電信等。
“歐洲，蘇格蘭很快會回來。”據“今日俄羅斯”（RT）報導，當地時間2020年12月31日，在英國與歐盟達成的未來關係協議開始生效的數分鐘後，蘇格蘭政府首席大臣尼古拉·斯特金在推特上發文稱，蘇格蘭“很快”就會重新加入歐盟。
