推动金价上涨的是新冠肺炎疫情造成的经济和政治上的不确定性，以及各国央行采取的行动，它们通过大幅下调利率和向市场注入大量资金来应对经济增长放缓，与此同时这加剧了市场对通胀的担忧，通胀通常会令其他资产贬值，同时也降低政府债券的回报率，令黄金更具吸引力。
分析师预计金价将进一步上涨，因为投资者寄望在新冠病毒撼动全球经济之际，黄金能够保值。现货黄金在过去14个月大涨40%，距离2011年创下的每盎司1921.28美元的纪录高位不远。
随着新冠疫情冲击各个经济体，今年投资者避险情绪浓厚，黄金在2020年的吸引力继续增强，中央银行和政府纷纷推出庞大的刺激计划，刺激资金持续流入黄金ETF，2020年迄今增加了655.6吨，超过了2009年全年的增长，而且今年每月都在上升。
金融投资者，主要在欧洲和美国，一直在进行前所未有的黄金购买狂潮。今年上半年，黄金ETF基金增持价值395亿美元的734吨黄金，根据世界黄金协会的数据，这一数字超过以往任何一整年，几乎占同期黄金开采量的一半。根据彭博汇总的初步数据，黄金ETF持仓量在周二升至3234.6吨。
新冠疫情使ETF持仓量达到了纪录高位，其影响超过了珠宝需求下降的影响，面对高风险和低收益率的情况，预计会有更多资金流入。
