分析指出，美国商务部表示，美国9月零售销售月率下滑主要由于家庭在汽车、建筑材料、兴趣爱好以及网上购物的支出有所减少。美国9月零售销售月率录得7个月以来的首次下滑，市场担忧制造业将导致经济疲软，而数据可能会推升对影响范围将蔓延至全美国的担忧，从而施压美联储本月继续降息。随着消费者支出放缓、贸易不确定性仍存、无序脱欧阴云未散，经济学家预计美联储将在10月降息来维持经济扩张。
另有分析指出，9月美国零售销售月率表现较差，即使上月数据由0.4%修正为0.6%，但10月30日美联储即将召开货币政策会议，在这一敏感时期糟糕的数据或将导致一些委员支持降息。
分析指出，一些位于购物中心内的商店最有可能被大规模关闭，包括大型百货公司梅西、大型商店和药店连锁彭尼公司、服装连锁企业Gap，以及知名时尚连锁品牌维多利亚的秘密等。与此同时，美国以低价为主的大型零售企业却取得良好的增长。
分析认为，持续改善的就业形势为消费者提供了一定的保障：当低收入人群有了稳定的工作、收入来源，他们自然有改善日常生活的强烈诉求。相比之下，收入稳定人群的消费支出变化相对较小。
