5月15日，现货黄金价格探底回升，而市场对当前的贸易形势抱有谨慎观点。而美国4月零售数据意外下滑，美联储年内降息概率超过70%，同时有分析师表示，美国经济到了衰退的境地。黄金受到支撑，持续上涨。而美联储内部对年内是否降息仍有分歧。
中美贸易摩擦近期升级。中国6月1日起将提高对包括冷冻蔬菜和液化天然气在内的一系列美国进口商品的关税，在与美国的贸易摩擦中予以回击。此前特朗普将价值2000亿美元的中国进口商品的关税从10%提高到25%；还计划对另外价值3000亿美元的中国商品加征关税。
最新公布的美国4月零售销售数据不及预期，且意外下滑，预示了低迷的未来通胀率。考虑到此前公布的CPI数据依旧低迷，此次疲软的零售销售数据或将进一步加强市场对美联储的降息预期。
不过尽管从2018年下半年起，美国已开始对中国部分商品加征关税，但2018年美国货物贸易逆差中有4192亿美元来自中国，较2017年的3736亿美元扩大了12.2%。事实表明，美国对中国商品加征关税，没能缩小美国对华货物贸易逆差。
美国堪萨斯城联储主席乔治周二表示，美联储无需把降息作为使通胀率接近2%目标策略的一部分。她认为，通胀低于目标的程度不大，特别是鉴于美国失业率处于低水准的情况下。
美国通胀在过去一年有所降温，目前仍低于美联储2%的目标。经过数年的缓慢加息，美联储今年按兵不动，部分原因是消费者物价下降。但是当前美联储决策层中对年内是否需要降息仍存在较大分歧，这也是支撑强势美元的主要动力。
分析师表示，美国经济增长似乎“完全”依赖公债、公司债和抵押支持债券，要不是增加了数万亿负债，美国经济本应已陷入萎缩。
过去五年名义GDP增长4.3%，但公共债务总额增长4.7%。在这种负债背景下，加上金融市场“已经沉迷于美联储的刺激政策”，对美国下一次经济衰退来说这是“非常非常危险的时期”。
尽管美国不会很快走向衰退，但美国经济显示出一些弱点。引用了花旗经济数据变化指数，该指数已降至金融危机以来最低水平。
美国股市和债市在走向震荡，在“充满信心地”做多黄金。他从1190美元开始就一直作多黄金。金价将站上每盎司1300美元。
