美国方面周三(10月8日)排除了与俄罗斯在叙利亚进行军事合作的可能性，指责俄罗斯推行的策略存在“悲剧性错误”，并称这会迫使美方将军事对话限制在基本飞行安全层面。
美国国防部长卡特在罗马访问期间召开的新闻发布会上表示，“我们不准备与俄罗斯在一项我们认为存在错误、存在悲剧性错误的策略上进行合作。”卡特上述批评言论相当于回绝了俄罗斯寻求更大程度协调行动的提议。俄罗斯眼下正在加强对叙利亚总统阿萨德的军事支持。
美国及其盟国已经对叙利亚的“伊斯兰国”目标展开了为期一年的空袭。与此同时，他们还在推动以外交途径迫使阿萨德下台。
同时，外媒周五(10月9日)报道，美国表示，将停止对叙利亚反政府武装的训练工作，转而向现有的反政府武装提供武器装备。美国耗资5亿美元的训练项目曾受到外界的猛烈批评，因为之前的反政府武装曾将车辆和弹药转交给极端组织。
在最初被培训并被派往叙利亚的两批反政府武装人员中，第一批7月被基地组织的分支努斯拉阵线(Jabhat al-Nusra)控制，第二批则在9月份将武器和装备交给了同一个组织以换取安全通道。
外媒引述美国国防部消息人士的话称，美国不再招募叙利亚反政府武装人员。停止为新人员提供培训后，美国改在土耳其成立小规模的训练中心，由反政府组织领导人为现有武装人员进行简单训练，主要包括一些基本战术技能，例如如何召唤空袭等。
