在外汇市场中，交易的单位为“手”，1手的合约约为10万元人民币。而外汇的交易杠杆有小，也有大。最普遍的交易杠杠为1:100，有的甚至为1:500。以欧元兑美元为例，1手合约为10万欧元，大约为13万美元。如果采用的是1：100的交易杠杆，则一手标准合约的保证金就是1300美元，如果采用1：500的交易杠杆，则1手合约的保证金就是260美元。
为了吸引更多境内的投资者进入到外汇市场中，现在许多外汇交易商允许0.1手甚至是0.01手的操作，那么操作一次最低仅需要保证金2.6美元。由此可见，投资外汇的资金门槛还是相当的低的，这就为许多的普通投资者参与外汇投资、分享外汇投资收益创造了可能。不过，外汇市场在提高保证金制度，降低投资者进入的门槛的同时，其风险也随杠杠比例而放大，因而投资者需要根据个人风险承受能力大小而定。
