12月15日，现货黄金重新走强，由于疫情的持续恶化削弱了疫苗接种带来的乐观情绪，加上美国财政刺激计划取得新进展，而且市场预计美联储本周将就扩大购债给出新的指引，让美元指数有所承压。
美国步英国后尘，也开始接种新冠疫苗，支撑了风险偏好，但感染人数和死亡率上升削弱了由此带来的乐观情绪。伦敦将进入更严格的封锁级别，因发现新冠病毒新变种。
美国医疗保健系统紧张程度到了临界点，但疫苗向美国公众广泛普及还需要几个月的时间，而且卫生官员警告美国人要对保持社会距离和戴口罩以遏制病毒传播保持谨慎。
英国卫生大臣汉考克说，已经发现了1000多例新变种，主要在英格兰东南部。尽管目前尚无迹象表明新菌株可能引起更严重的疾病或导致疫苗失效，但汉考克说，这可能有助于提高感染率。
一项9080亿美元的两党新冠救助计划将被分成两部分，这让人产生了这样的希望：救助计划中已经得到两党支持的很大一部分至少将获得批准。其中一项为7480亿美元的提案，包括对小企业、失业者和疫苗分发的援助。它将为失业者提供每周300美元的额外福利，为期16周。
另一项1600亿美元的提案则存在两大症结：对企业的责任保护以及对州和地方政府的保护。民主党一直在努力向州和地方政府提供援助，以确保不会解雇更多的劳动，包括警察，消防员和紧急医疗人员。但共和党人普遍对此表示反对。
预计在年内的最后一次政策会议后，美联储有望宣布，预计经济增长将回升，就业将随之增加，这两种观点都可能反映在新的经济预测中。但利率点阵图可能表明，决策者希望在2023年之前继续维持关键隔夜利率在接近零的水平。许多分析师还预计，美联储将就维持大规模债券购买计划多长时间给出新的指引。
如果美联储本周就其资产购买计划发布新的指导方针，那么它可能会因此敞开新的大门，部分是为了防止任何市场对明年经济前景改善的过度反应，从而避免出现美元走强给经济复苏带来新的不利影响。
