7月8日，现货黄金突破千八关口，创下九年新高，同时由于疫情加重，美国不少州重新封锁，超40%美国人削减支出，而消费是维持美国经济的最大支柱。美联储担心新增病例会增加企业的不安情绪，称美联储会有更多措施，这些都提振了的黄金的多头。
当地时间7月7日，美国总统特朗普表示，美国“不会关闭，永远不会关闭”，再次要求美国全面重新开放。特朗普在一场围绕有关重新开放学校的活动中称，现在已有超过13万美国人死于新冠病毒。“我认为我们本来可能会死250万或300万人。”他说，所以美国可能已经拯救了数十万人的生命。
近期的一份调查显示，超过40%的受访美国人表示，他们将削减的一些自由支配支出，这可能会加剧疫情已经造成的巨大经济破坏。消费者增加支出恰恰是陷入困境的美国零售商急切盼望的。
随着今年春季确诊病例激增，美国各州关闭或限制了沙龙和餐馆等5月份的开业，体育联盟推迟了他们的赛季，音乐会也被取消。失业率保持在10%以上，许多因疫情导致的暂时裁员正在变成永久性裁员。
7月底，一些在疫情期间生效的财政刺激计划将到期，其中包括每周额外600美元的失业救济金，这一计划尤其提振了低收入家庭的支出。但美国新冠病毒确诊病例激增，威胁到消费者支出增长，加剧了市场谨慎基调，美指承压97关口附近。
在美国经济大面积重新开放、数万亿美元的财政刺激计划开始惠及失业和受重创的企业之后，美国经济在5月和6月创造了750万个就业岗位。但一些州不顾卫生官员警告，急于重启经济活动，导致新冠病毒重新激增，企业生产面临新的阻力，正引起美联储越来越多的关注。
投资者对新冠疫情立场愈发谨慎，美联储对经济的评论听起来有些暗淡。目前有理由为之担心，因为还难以判断疫情何时能得到控制。若美国货币政策或财政政策进一步放宽，黄金有望在年底之前上冲千九关口。
