5月5日，现货黄金在千七美元关口展开拉锯状态，美元指数连续走强，但市场担心全球贸易形势重新恶化，可能引发美元抢购潮，欧洲央行购债计划受到司法挑战，对欧元利空，助涨美指，同时美国政府疯狂举债的做法也限制了美元的涨势。
全球新冠病毒确诊病例接近360万，死亡病例则已超过25万。但过去一周，全球感染新冠病毒病例的增速为2%-3%，较3月中旬的约13%有所降低。意大利和美国等国家有限度地放松封锁措施，以重振经济。
意大利是全球疫情最严重的国家之一，在实施近两个月居家令后已允许约450万人复工。建筑工作可以恢复，亲戚也可以重新团聚。但朋友间的聚会仍在禁止之列；多数商店在5月18日前仍需关闭；学校、电影院和剧场也不能开。
美国财政部周一表示，计划第二季举债近3万亿美元，是前次纪录的五倍多。财政部在声明稿中表示，其将在4-6月当季举债2.999万亿美元，这甚至比2009年全财年1.8万亿美元还要高得多。
2月初，政府预估将在二季度偿还560亿美元债务，当时还不清楚新冠病毒是否会在美国广泛传播，这促使财政部预计当期新的可流通债券净额为负值。
国会已经批准近3万亿美元拨款，来帮助个人和公司渡过为减缓病毒传播速度而实施的停工。新的举债目标是前次单季纪录的五倍，当时是在2008年下半年为抗击金融危机而大举借贷。
欧元兑美元创四个交易日新低至1.0825，日内最大跌幅逾0.7%。因德国最高法院周二裁决，德国央行必须在未来三个月内停止按照欧洲央行的长期刺激计划购买公债，除非欧洲央行能证明其必要性。但法官称，他们的决定不适用于欧洲央行在上个月获批的抗疫计划——旨在支撑经济的7500亿欧元购债计划。
在德国法院作出裁决之前，欧洲法院已经批准了这项计划，称这并不构成违法融资。虽然永久拒绝德国央行参与资产购买的可能性似乎很小，但除非这一司法挑战被彻底挫败，否则投资者无法积极看待欧洲的抗疫前景，但欧元走弱利好美元，可能稀释黄金的避险风采。
